Internet via balloons

High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS)

As early as 2013, the "Loon" project began to bring access to the Internet to remote areas of New Zealand. This was followed by a test operation via Brazil and a regular operation via Sri Lanka.

After natural disasters, a fleet of balloons was launched each over Peru and Puerto Rico. This system seems to be particularly suitable for such a scenario.

Balloons are currently also flying over the Amazon, Mozambique and Kenya.

The technology behind the orchestration of the fleets is very interesting. The solar-powered communication devices that are carried are pure top technology and provide 4G / LTE signals for end customers. The balloons can thus be reached directly via the smartphone, without any special intermediate devices.
